Class #1 Mechanical Reflection

1) How can I use ifttt to improve as an educator. Szymon Machajewski wrote on October 2, 2011 about how he uses iftt and I thought that this would be wonderful way for busy educators to remember our Touro classes! I use Twitter to remind my students in CO230 about the class. I happen to have all three sections of the class on Wednsday starting about 11am, so based on ifttt.com time rules I generate a public Twitter message: IF Every weekday at 10:00 AM on W then Post a new tweet to @grccProf "#GRCC students, reminder: #CO230 - Intro to Telecommunications is today! Please login to Blackboard to check the schedule and assignments."

2) Students can use ifttt as a way to login in to all accounts at one time instead of logging in to each account separately which would save the student time and enable them to access multiple resources efficiently. I will need to play around with this site a bit more to see if it will become a part of my daily routine.
Class #1 Theoretical Reflection

It's all about our students and modeling life-long learning. We all must have a growth mindset. We as digital immigrant teachers are here to facilitate learning to our digital native students, but this does not mean that we have to know it all. We all, administrators, teachers, parents, and students can learn from each other. It is all about the Zone of Proximal Development for us all. We all have strengths and striving areas. The most
important part is reflecting and deciding what to focus on so that we move forward academically, technologically, and/or social-emotionally.

I Think Ralph Waldo Emerson and Sarah Caldwell sum up Adam Bellows 10 commandments well. Ralph Waldo Emerson says, "Always do what you are afraid to do." And Sarah Caldwell says, " Learn anything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can-there will always be a
time when you will be grateful that you did." This is an exciting time in education and I am glad that I am a part of it all.

Class #2 Screencast Using Google Forms

Class 2: Theoretical Reflection

1.)   Watch TED talk by Salman Khan:

2.)   Watch this critique of Khan Academy by Derek Muller: Khan Academy the Effectiveness of Science Videos

3.)   Watch this TED talk by Chris Anderson: How is You Tube is Driving Innovation

Q1: Which of the three videos did you enjoy the most and why?

I found inspiring information and tips in each of these videos.  Instead of telling you my favorite and why I thought it would be best to help solidify my understanding by sharing what spoke to me about each video.

In the TED talk by Salman Khan, he talks about the notion of who is gifted needs to be revisited now that we are in the digital age.  The same kids that we thought were slow, you may now think are gifted.  The digital age enables students to watch a process over again in their own time frame. Students who were never able to show mastery can do that now with the help of technology.  Are labels due to a coincidence of time?  I like that Sal is “thinking outside of the box” about that!

In Derek Muller’s critique of Khan Academy’s Science Videos, I liked how he used data to support the importance of addressing a misconception before a lesson.  Teaching science is complex in that many students think they know so they often don’t pay attention.  They then do not recognize that which was presented differs from what they already know.  This can cause them to not learn a thing or build their confidence on wrong thinking.  It was found that the khan videos are good as long as misconceptions are addressed before the students watch the lesson.

In the Ted Talk by Chris Anderson, How You Tube is Driving Innovation it is exciting to think about crowd accelerated innovation!  We no longer have to learn at schools in silos.  This is the participation age.  We are moving from one person speaking to many to many speaking!

Class 2: Mechanical Reflection

Q2: What questions do you have about either the screencasting with Google Form integration system, or TED Ed? Any other comments?

I am so energized by what I have learned watching screencasting with Google form integration system and by what I have learned watching TED ED.  I feel so much hope as an educator that we are being armed with free resources to “think smarter, not harder” as educators and that these tools will help us to reach more students.  ALL really does mean ALL!  Now we just need to get the technology in the hands of the teachers and students.
